What is a newspaper jacket ad — and when is it worth it?
The ad that wraps the paper. What a jacket is, when it pays for itself, and how to design the page that every reader sees first.

A newspaper jacket is an advertisement that wraps around the paper, so the first page a reader sees that morning is yours rather than the news. It's the loudest single thing you can do in print — and one of the most expensive — which is why it's worth being clear about what it is and when it earns its cost.
What a jacket is
The paper is wrapped in an extra sheet carrying the ad. The outside is the front page of the jacket — the cover — and the sheet usually carries a second ad page on the inside or the back. The real front page of the news sits underneath. Sometimes the jacket carries the paper's masthead across the top, so it still reads as that paper; sometimes the artwork takes the whole page.
Jackets are sold for the main paper and, separately, for supplements such as Delhi Times or HT City. A supplement jacket reaches fewer readers and usually costs less than the main paper's.
| Variation | What the reader gets | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Front & inside | A cover page, and a full page behind it when the jacket is opened | A launch: the idea on the cover, the details inside |
| Front & back | A cover page, and the back of the wrap | Two messages, or two projects from one developer |
| Supplement jacket | The same, around a city supplement | Local launches, and a lower cost of entry |
When a jacket is worth it
- Launches. A new project, a new store, a new campus — when the job is to make one announcement impossible to miss.
- Festive mornings. Navratri, Dhanteras, Diwali: the days when buying decisions are being made anyway. See This Diwali, move in.
- One-day events. A property carnival, an opening, a registration date.
- Scale signals. For a developer, a jacket says the project is big enough to own the paper for a day — and buyers notice that.

When it isn't
A jacket buys one morning. If the goal is a steady flow of enquiries over a month, the same money spread across several half pages, or split between print and outdoor, will usually do more. A jacket is also wasted on a message that isn't ready — a launch without a price, a site visit without a date.
Designing a jacket
- Treat the front as a cover, not an ad. One image, one line, the brand. The reader decides in a second whether to open it.
- Put the details inside. Location map, configurations, payment plan, RERA details, contact — the inside page is where a reader who's interested looks.
- Design around the masthead if the paper carries one on the jacket, so the headline doesn't collide with it.
- Make front and inside one piece. The inside should feel like turning the page of the same story, not a second ad.
In our archive, Aims Golf Avenue (Hindustan Times) and JMD Avenue 75 (The Times of India) each used the front for the idea and the inside for the detail; SVG Realty used the front of an HT City jacket for Central Square and the inside for its sister project, Town Square. You can see them, front and inside, on our newspaper work.
Booking and timing
Only one advertiser can wrap a given edition on a given day, so jackets are booked further ahead than ordinary ads — and festive dates furthest of all. Confirm the edition, the date, which pages you get and whether the masthead appears, and get the paper's exact specifications before artwork starts. Jackets are usually priced per insertion rather than by size.
How much does a jacket ad cost?
Jackets are priced per insertion and vary widely by paper, edition and day; in a main Delhi edition of a large English daily they cost many times what an inside full page does. Supplement and zonal-edition jackets are a cheaper way in. Ask for a quote that names the exact edition and date.
Is a jacket the same as a front-page ad?
Not quite. A front-page ad shares the real front page with the news; a jacket replaces what the reader sees first with a whole page that's entirely yours.
